Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too late to register my child for pre-kindergarten?

Pre-K registration for the upcoming school year begins mid-March each year, but continues throughout the year for students who are 4 years old on or before September 1st. When we fill the 264 spots awarded by the state, we continue to add students to a waiting list. As families who registered have changes in plans, we fill vacancies from the waiting list. To get your child’s name on the list, call 903-2136 or 903-2100. Other sites in the area that also provide lottery funded pre-k programs can be found in the links for families on the Bright from the Start website - http://decal.ga.gov/

When does pre-k start?

Lee County’s Pre-K Program follows the school system’s calendar. School hours are from 8:15-2:55. Buses transport children from their homes to the primary schools where pre-k personnel are stationed to supervise and accompany on the last leg of the bus ride to the pre-k center. Students who do not ride the bus may be dropped off between 7:30 and 8:15 and should be picked up by 3:15.

What school supplies will my child need for pre-k?

Because we are lottery funded, all materials are provided. We do ask, however, that you provide a backpack, two towels for rest time (no nap mats), and a change of clothes. From time to time, teachers may “wish” for additional items beyond those provided by Bright from the Start; if you can help, it will certainly be appreciated, but you should never feel obligated to provide these additional items.

Does pre-k have a dress code?

Lee County Pre-K is an active and fun place to learn. Children paint, glue, play in the sand and water, and play outdoors each day, weather permitting. So, sturdy, comfortable clothing that you and your child don’t mind getting dirty are a must!

Make sure your child’s clothes are easy to pull up and down for restroom needs and fasteners are easily manipulated. No overalls, bedroom slippers or pajamas. Tennis shoes work best for all activities; wheels, heels, backless shoes and flip-flops are not permitted.

When will I know who my child’s teacher is?

Parents will be mailed a postcard in late July informing you of your child’s teacher. Open house will be Thursday, August 3. If your last name begins with the letters A-L you may attend from 3:30-4:30. If your last name begins with the letters M-Z you may attend from 4:30-5:30. You will also receive an email from your teacher Tuesday, August 1.

My child was put on the waiting list. Is there any chance there will be room?

As we hear from parents who have had to make other arrangements for their children due to relocation or changes in plans, students from the waiting list are called and offered an opportunity to enroll. While there is a possibility that we will be able to accommodate your child, you may want to check the links for families on the Bright from the Start website site at http://decal.ga.gov/ to find other centers in our area that provide lottery funded pre-k programs.
