Middle School Gifted Program

The responsibility of the Lee County Middle School West Campus Gifted Program is to expand the knowledge of the individual, to challenge the mind to think beyond the concrete level into the abstract, and to promote individuality as well as intellectual and creative thinking. Gifted students at the middle school are served through academic classes. Academic classes may include any of the five disciplines: social studies, reading, science, English and mathematics. Students are placed in academic classes utilizing the Advanced Content model. These students are grouped homogeneously on the basis of achievement and interest in a specific academic content area of mathematics and reading. Other students may be served via the clustering model, which means that curriculum modifications are made for gifted students in a heterogeneous regular classroom. Testing for the gifted program takes place in the fall for students new to Lee County and in the spring for students who qualify. Please see the LC Gifted Manual for detailed information.

Middle School Title I Program

Lee County Middle School West Campus is a Title I school, and some students in grades six through eight receive targeted Title I program services in either a math or reading connections class. The scheduling model used for the students is a pull out model with students receiving services during one of their two connections classes. Procedures are in place to identify students in the school who might be eligible for Title I services. The Title I eligibility pool consists of any student who falls in the bottom 25th percentile of their grade level based on multiple criteria. Criteria used for ranking students consists of standardized reading and math scores, universal screening scores for math and reading, averages in regular academic math and reading classes, student Lexile scores, and whether or not the student has received services in the past via special education, Title I, and/or gifted programs.

Middle School Special Education Program

Lee County Middle School West Campus students who have been identified as needing special education services are placed in the least restrictive environment available and appropriate for them. Most of our special education students are served using an “inclusion” model for classroom instruction and study skills or direct math/reading class for additional support.
